Does Heavy Drinking Lead to Drug Addiction?
I know a woman who has had a real strong party mentality for the past 30 years. She used to drink quite a bit, almost on a nightly basis, but I never expected to find out that due to severe back pain she has become a heroin addict. I know that there is not a direct relationship between excessive drinking and taking illicit drugs, but I can’t help but think that this woman’s party mentality and heavy drinking didn’t somehow pave the way for her heroin addiction.
Yes, I realize that she started taking heroin for her back pain, but other people have experienced terrible back pain without resorting to taking heroin. I can’t help but wonder if her life would have turned out differently had she gone to a local alcohol treatment clinic years ago to address her problem drinking. Who knows? Maybe by overcoming her alcohol problem she would have been more able to address her back pain in a more traditional and healthy way rather than resorting to taking heroin.
