What Causes A Headache From Red Wine?

Headaches can be caused by all sorts of different things including food and drink, but what causes a headache from red wine?

Alcohol in general will lead to a headache if consumed in sufficient quantity because it causes your body to lose water and also expands your blood levels so that the blood vessels in your head press upon a series of pain receptors which line their walls. The expansion of your blood vessels is caused by toxins contained within the alcohol once it gets into the blood stream and here there is a considerable difference between the toxins in different forms of alcohol. In general, the darker the alcohol the greater the toxic effect. This explains why you often get a headache from red wine, but not from white wine and from whiskey but not from vodka.
