Hunting Dog Training – Start the Right Way

When done right, hunting dog training will lead to safe and happy hunting for both master and canine. For best results, training a hunting dog should begin in the animal’s puppyhood. Begin with regular dog training techniques. Commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “go” should be taught early on, using quiet but firm tones of voice. Behavior training is important for a hunting dog, too. Teach the dog to be obedient and respectful by incorporating praise and affection to reward good behavior. Electronic shock collars are often used in hunting dog training in order to get a quicker response from the dog: speed is key when on the hunt. When training with a shock collar, begin with what is called “avoidance training.” This is when you release very low level shocks at the same time a command is given. As soon as the command is obeyed, the shock stimulation is stopped. This type of training teaches the dog to listen to commands quickly and without any distractions.
