Qualifications for Film Tax Credits
Qualifications for film tax credits generally include only the amounts of cash expenditures within a state. Credits are usually given to the producer of a film project, however, some states also provide film tax credits to the investors in a film project as well. Increasingly common, wages earned in states for these productions are also typically exempted as this would create tax liabilities and disincentives for out-of-state actors. Iowa is one state that provides one of the most favorable business climates for film production due to its use of Iowa Film Tax Credits for both producers and investors as well as its exemption of wages earned within the state from taxation.
What expenditures within a state qualify for these credits is also an important factor as well as the cost burden for applying for, documenting expenditures, and receiving these credits. How long these credits remain valid is also an important fiscal concern.
